The Dwarves are a short, strong people, known for their discovery and subsequent mining of coal, the most important material in the world. The Dwarves have control of most known veins of coal of any significance, and therefore control the supply of coal for the world. This control of coal has given the Dwarves great control over the global economy.
Each dwarf is expected by his or her clan to spend years working in the coal mines. This extended period of time covered in raw coal dust, in combination with uncommon bathing, and the slightly magical properties of the coal has permanently stained the skin of all known dwarves coal black. This trait is passed down from parent to child, and either it cannot be reversed, or the dwarves just don’t care enough to try.
The Dwarves are the creations of Lodhgrum, God of the Land, Miners, and Farmers. Many Mountain Dwarves “Carry Lodhgrum’s Pick,” sharing their creator’s affinity for mining and metalwork, while many Hill Dwarves “Carry Lodhgrum’s Hoe,” sharing his affinity for working the land and farming. these roles are not ridged, but are merely racial trends. regardless of race, all dwarves are expected to spend at least 15 years of their long lives in the coal mines, and many spend much longer.
